Today’s set is of the Antioch eBART station that is under construction. It is located at Highway 4 and Hillcrest Avenue in Antioch and is planned to open in 2016, 16 years behind schedule. It will be the eastern terminus of eBART, BART’s first DMU line, which will extend from the Pittsburg/Bay Point station, passing through a future (infill) station at Pittsburg. Passengers will need to transfer at Pittsburg from eBART to BART.
What is interesting here is that our positions the creation of a DMU line is the greatest thing then sliced bread. A DMU or diesel multiple unit is a multiple-unit train powered by on-board diesel engines. At a time we want to get away from fossil fuels, BART management and our transport officials feel it is better to have a DMU instead of a electric line. The original excuse was that BART, who generates its own electric power, had not enough capacity to power a real BART line to Antioch and beyond. However that was just an excuse since the extension planned for San Jose and Livermore are all electric. Thanks Supervisor Federal Glover for treating us like second class citizens all those years.
