This category is about my road to recovery from Multiple Myeloma (MM). MM is a cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell. Plasma cells help you fight infections by making antibodies that recognize and attack germs.

2017-03-27 Recovery Day 21

As reported the evening of day 20 was another Big Bang event first starting with nausea with the uncontrollable urge to vomit, which needed to prevented, and finally the out of control pain. The good news, somehow I fail asleep and by midnight the pain was gone. The rest of the night (noon to early morning 5:30) was mostly pain free, and I even got some sleep.

2017-03-26 Recovery Day 20

The night was a repeat of last night, mostly pain free, but not much sleep, mostly catnaps. Not sure if this is because of the chemo drugs working around the clock. Time will tell.

Today was the first day since 3rd March that Dianne, Denise and I were home together, which had a positive impact on all of us.

2017-03-25 Recovery Day 19

It always nice to be back home, specially after a long stay somewhere. I my case add the fact that I spend most of my time In bed. Overall the first night was a bit unexpected, I was for most of it pain free, but did not sleep as much, mostly it was catnaps. Not sure the reason behind those short cycles. I hope there will not be a repeat tonight.

2017-03-23 Recovery Day 17

Yesterday I started my post with trying to figure out what days did my road to recovery start, after some some checking, I concluded it must have been the 6 March. I was correct, Dianne check her calendar and notes and came up with the same date. Not that it is important, but It would be nice to know when this is all over and looking back, when was what.

2017-03-22 Recovery Day 16

Now that I caught up with yesterday’s posting about my journey, I will start posting daily summaries for each day of my road to recovery. The first issue I faced was what title should I use? I decided to keep it simple by using YYYY-MM-DD Recovery Day XX. Sounds simple, right? Yes it does, except I had a hard time to figure out when was Day 1. So, after checking my calendar, text messages and emails, I concluded that my first day to start my recovery was the 6 March (for now until told otherwise). That makes today, day 16.

How did I get here?

It has been a few days since I posted my article The road to Recovery in which I announced being diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma (MM). I provided the details of tests that I underwent because of lower back pain that surfaced because of hour long rush hour driving (2 X 2.5 hrs per day for 14 weeks) and sitting at UCSF visiting our daughter. Lucky for me, had it not been for the lower back pain, I may still not have known about having MM.

The road to Recovery

About 6 weeks ago, I started to complain about a pain in my hip, see posting Nothing but Clouds – Week 5. I went to see various Doctors, and although the pain decreased after a cortisone injection, it soon came back and 2 weeks ago the pain spread to my other hip and shoulder.

I then went for a series of X-rays which showed that my spine (T4 vertebra) was partially fractured near my lungs and there were also some large masses visible.
