This category is about my road to recovery from Multiple Myeloma (MM). MM is a cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell. Plasma cells help you fight infections by making antibodies that recognize and attack germs.

2017-05-23 Recovery Day 78

Today’s good news took some time to show up. Most of the day was used to talk about what is it with that shoulder? Some of the option were just to academic, such as “no brain, no pain”.

So what is the good news? It took some X-rays of the shoulder to determine that there is no bone being attached by the cancer, nor are there any breaks or tears. The concussion is that the pain is muscular and a possible chemo side effect. Now that we all know what it is, we will start tomorrow with resuming our PT and OT therapy addressing the muscular side of pain.

2017-05-22 Recovery Day 77

Today’s good news turned quickly to bad news. I woke up with the pain in my right shoulder almost gone. With that in mind I was looking forward to a good day of therapy. However, was I wrong. I had my first OT session at 9:30 which was to sit on the edge of the bed and use a special tool to put on my socks. No problem getting to sit on the edge of the bed, but pulling on the string of the special device to get the sock on to my foot, ended quickly because of the pain that shot up on all of my right side of my shoulder.

2017-05-21 Recovery Day 76

Today’s good news, is that I had a secret visitor. My daughter Denise came with my wife to spend a few hours entertaining me. Mind you, her real reason is that there is an IKEA on the way home. We all together walked for about 300 yards, if not more. I also was able with the help of Dianne to shave. Last but not least I also was able to visit the toilet eliminating for now any fear of constipation.

2017-05-20 Recovery Day 75

There is a lot of good news to report for today. For starters I had a good night of sleep. The good news started with the great omelette I had to start my day. As part of my OT exercises I had a shower. My shoulder pain seems to be under control using a water heating pad. I should also not forget that Dianne was here since she stayed overnight. Her present was more than welcome since she helped with everything that she has been doing for me since my diagnoses.

2017-05-19 Recovery Day 74

Today’s good news, is foremost the fact that Dianne spend most of the day and night with me here at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center. Medically speaking the good news for today is that we determine that the right shoulder pain is caused by muscle spasm and muscle tension. The goal now is to use heat and cold compresses to eliminate the pain so that we can work to complete the Physical and Occupational Therapy.

As to the bad news for today, with so much going it was hard to remember if there was anything bad that we needed to point out.

2017-05-18 Recovery Day 73

First the good news, sadly there isn’t that much to report. I was very much ready to have a successful OT/PT Day, but it all came crumpling down before my first OT session. The reason for all of this was a pain attack that set back the progress we had made in pain management. It is difficult for me to explain the why behind it, the only thing I understand is that we needed to make some adjustments to the OT/PT sessions.

The bad news, I believe we covered the bad part under the good news.

2017-05-17 Recovery Day 72

First the good news, there is not much of it, except for finally having that long awaited bow movement during last night (day 71 to 72). It started at 9:51 PM, called and got the Nurse who worked with me by shortly before 10:00. She removed the lower leg stress control cables and unplug my IV cable. It took me alone 2 minutes to get in to the sitting position on the edge of the bed, from there into the walker, walking to the commode, and finally sitting down. I started immediately and was done @ 10:30 with no room to spare in the pot. I got back to bed, finding my sweat spot and was ready to go back to sleep.

The bad news, There were a few flaws, but I already the details, so nothing to report.

2017-05-16 Recovery Day 71

First the good news, yesterday there was not much good news, I ended my post with “I guess better late than never, were else would I get Acute Rehabilitation, chemo By Mouth Only, and, short chemo by IV“, all in the same place? Today their work on all fronts was just fantastic.

The bad news, There were a few flaws, but I already the details, so nothing to report.

2017-05-15 Recovery Day 70

First the good news, I had a good day until about 2:00 PM (14:00). In the morning my vacuum pump was removed. I was able move a bit more in bed, even could move and sit in the bed. From the bed sitting position I could stand up in the walker and walk a bit around. My pain management gotten back to normal in that the patch works in conjunction of the breakthrough pain which is automatically dispensed every three hours. However wouldn’t you know, they quickly screwed it up.

The bad news. It all started with getting ready with the transfer to the local Acute Rehabilitation Center which was scheduled 3:30. To limit the pain the breakthrough pill was to be taken 3:00 allowing 30 minutes for it to dissolve and be at its maximum effectiveness. Sure enough the breakthrough pill arrive at 3:30, delaying the transfer by 30 minutes.

2017-05-12 Recovery Day 67

First the good news, last night the case manager for Alta Bates Summit Acute Rehabilitation Center came by doing a pre-evaluation to determine if I am a candidate for their recovery program. The preliminary answer was yes, the final answer will most likely be Monday. Until then, rest, rest and more rest, getting pain management back under control.

The bad news, as the nights before, still having trouble falling asleep because of the delay in getting my final medication on time. We were working on this today, let’s see if we have it now under control.
