2017-10-16 Recovery Day 224

It looks like I got myself into a morning schedule, getting up around 7:00 and having breakfast by 8:00. Around 9:00-9:15 I will go for my first walk 30 minute of the day. Lunch is at noon (12:00) followed by my second walk. My last walk is around 4:00 PM with dinner around 5:30 to 6:00 PM. I retire to bed around 7:30 to 8:00 PM and watch TV until 9:00 when I start my sleep.

2017-10-15 Recovery Day 223

We got up around 7:00 and had breakfast shortly afterwards. A bit after 9 o’clock Dianne and I went to the Big Break Park. We had planned to go yesterday but it was to cold and windy. Today the weather was on our side. It took us about 30 minutes to walk slowly to the fishing pier. Dianne snapped a few photos of me before we started our way back. Instead of going back home at the end of our walk, we entered the Visiting Center to see who of the staff was there. I was in luck that a) that the center was empty of visitors and b) Nicole Gange was there, Dianne and I provided an update about my treatment and what was lying ahead. By the time we got back home it was almost lunch time.

2017-10-14 Recovery Day 222

Being Saturday we got up around 7:00 and had breakfast shortly afterwards. Afterwards I rested a bit before going to the Big Break Park for a longer walk. However, before doing so I received a call from Mario Paoli, a German class mate. Last time I spoke to Mario must have been in 2014, if not later. Mario was concerned if I was near the fire and smoke, since the German News was not very exact in reporting the exact location. After I informed Mario about the location of the fire and my house, we chatted a bit more. I found out that Mario did not know about my illness, which was a surprise to me because he was at our 50 year class reunion a few weeks ago where some other class mates were that knew about it. I updated Mario and we will agreed to keep in touch by using FaceTime.

2017-10-13 Recovery Day 221

Today I got up around 7:00 and had breakfast shortly afterwards. I got ready for Denise to drop me of at Dr. D’s office for my 8:00 appointment. The session did go very well, the X-Rays did not show any problem, the opposite was true, the insertions are healing very well. The pain and discomfort is part of the healing and will take time since it was a complex surgery. The discomfort/pressure on both shoulder blades is due to the muscles needing to strengthen again. To do so I will have another month of physical therapy, after my house arrest. Overall it was all good news that eliminates some concerns I had because of the 3 weeks at UCSF lying in a bed that was not good for my back. My next appointment with Dr. D. will be in 6 months.

2017-10-12 Recovery Day 220

Today, for most part was a good day. I got up around 6:00, had Breakfast and got my stuff sorted. With stuff, I mean my laptop, iPhone and MacMini which had gotten a bit out of sync. Around 9:00 I wend with my neighbor Gary for a 40 minute slow walk. It did not take long before I received calls from my cousin in Germany, and a colleague, Jean Kubler, from my days working with the UNECE on UN/EDIFACT. By the time I was done with the calls it was past noon, time for lunch.

2017-10-11 Recovery Day 219

Today I got up a bit earlier at 6:30 since we had to go to UCSF MC. I had Breakfast and got our stuff together for the drive to UCSF. Dianne picked me up at 8:00 for our journey to UCSF. Today it took us 2 1/2 hour to get there, 10 minutes before our appointment.

Today I did not only gave blood for the regular Complete Blood Count with Differential panel, but also for MAGNESIUM, IGM, IGG and IGA SERUM panels. Since the results were excellent there is no need to change my medication. My next appointment will be in two weeks.

2017-10-10 Recovery Day 218

Today, like the last few days, was not a good day. It started after waking up, my stomach would not settle. Even after taken Zofran my stomach would not settle down. Just like yesterday it is mostly discomfort and very little stomach pain. As to my back, it is not as much pain, as it is discomfort, pressure on both my shoulder blades. For now I keep it under control with taking the breakthrough medication. I will know more on Friday after my visit with Doctor D.

2017-10-09 Recovery Day 217

Today was not a good day, it turned out to be a so-so day. As during yesterday’s afternoon my stomach would not settle. It started right after getting up and lasted all day long. It is mostly discomfort and very little stomach pain. As to my back, the pain is still there controlled with my breakthrough pain. Actually it is not as much pain as it is discomfort, pressure on both my shoulder blades. I will know more on Friday after my visit with Doctor D.

2017-10-08 Recovery Day 216

Before talking about today, a comment about last night. For the first time since being told about my illness, I have slept for 6+ hours, from 9:00 PM to 3:20 AM.
As to today, it was almost identical to yesterday. We got up around 7:00 and had breakfast. Dianne prepared her special McDianne. Afterwards we wend for our “long” walk. Our plan for the morning/afternoon was for Denise and Dianne to go shopping at Downtown Walnut Creek. For me it was resting and walking, trying to get my stomach settled.

2017-10-07 Recovery Day 215

Today was a good and so-so day. We got up around 7:00 and had breakfast. Dianne prepared my favored breakfast – Denver Omelet. Our plan for the morning was to go out for an outing. Dianne and Denise took me out following all the rules provided by UCSF MC. It was great, a trip that did not stop at the hospital or doctor. We returned home around 1:00 PM, just in time for me to rest and the end of the good day part.
