Mac News: Google’s ‘Next Dimension’ of maps-should Apple be worried?
Not content with being outclassed by Apple, Google today sent out invitations to select members of the press. The invite graphics teases “the next dimension of Google Maps”. The search giant’s presser takes place next Wednesday, June 6, at 9:30am, five days ahead of Apple’s worldwide developers conference that kicks off with a keynote in San Francisco’s Moscone West on June 11.

Technology News: Bashing Facebook For All The Wrong Reasons
So Facebook’s IPO was a disaster. Or maybe it wasn’t. Yes, it was an utter fiasco. No, wait: “The debacle was not the IPO but all the whining by speculators who didn’t make money.” Nope, it was “the flop of the decade“, the worst first week of any IPO in years. Au contraire: “What we have here is an investment banker acting ethically. And the whole financial press is atwitter about it.” Nuh-uh: “The IPO discount is the cost of going public.” Yadda, yadda, yadda, ad nauseum.

Programming News: How to get your Raspberry Pi up and running …
I’ve had a chance to play with my new and awesome toy the last few days. It arrived last month, but because of other responsibilities (exams, projects and GSoC) I didn’t really have a chance to really test it out. A few months ago I received a mail from Farnell that it was my turn to pre-order my Raspberry Pi. I ordered instantly, and I’m still waiting it to get shipped (maybe I should check on it, or see if they’ve billed me in the meanwhile).

Other News: The Infrastructure of the Cloud
The other night I watched what sounded like it would be an unbelievably boring episode of Frontline, on the subject of cell phone towers. In fact it was riveting, and disturbing. The next morning I read Laura Miller’s review of a new book called Tubes: A Journey To The Center of the Internet, by Andrew Blum. That may also sound dull, but it, too, was an eye-opener. Taken together, they’ve made me reconsider the physical infrasture of “the cloud.”
