Apple News: Apple and Microsoft could make 600% more from Android than Google in 2013
Google’s mobile operating system Android may be winning the smartphone wars with over 75 percent market share. But Apple and Microsoft could be making more from Android than Google — up to 600 percent more next year. This past weekend Apple and HTC signed a patent cross-licensing deal that, according to one analyst, could see Apple collect between $6 and $8 for each and every Android smartphone HTC sells. And Microsoft, which has been working on licensing its patents to Android manufacturers for a number of years and has licensing deals with LG, Acer, Samsung, and many other companies, collects as much as $5 per device.

Technology News: Guess who else wants to build ARM-based servers? Texas Instruments
Texas Instruments, the company behind the Speak & Spell and the application processor in the Kindle, is joining the ARM-based server crush with a series of processor cores that will use the ARM IP from its cell phone business as well as its own digital signal processing chips to deliver high performance computing power to the data center. What’s most interesting about its foray into the data center market is that its cores also come with networking integrated onto the chip. The server chips are part of a series of chips that TI is calling its KeyStone multicore architecture.

Programming News: Rails 3.2.9 has been released!
A DoS attack was recently found in Ruby that uses specially-crafted input to dramatically reduce the performance of hashes, thus using up lots of CPU time. Rails applications may be vulnerable to an attacker sending a specially-crafted HTTP request to exploit this. A good way to limit the effectiveness of such attacks is to configure your frontend servers to limit the size of the HTTP request line, headers and body. Nginx does this by default. Apache can be configured to do this by setting the LimitRequestBody directive. In addition, all Ruby 1.9 users are recommended to upgrade to ruby–1.9.3 patchlevel 327 to get this security fix.
