Apple News: The iPhone 5c Is Driving Customers Into The Arms Of The iPhone 5s
The iPhone 5c isn’t a failure by any means, but even so, it’s not selling as well as most people would have expected, with sales of the iPhone 5s believed to outpace its plastic mid-range sibling by as much as three to one. And while it’s true that the iPhone 5c is still selling well enough to make it the second or third bestselling smartphone at every carrier, it’s still a middling success compared to the iPhone 5s. Yet maybe that’s what Apple wants. In fact, maybe Apple realized that by selling the previous year’s phone for $100 less, they were cutting into their own margins by selling what was, in design, a luxury phone at a mid-tier cost. If so, the iPhone 5c is working exactly as designed.

Technology News: Google builds a ‘Nest’ for future of smart homes
When our Internet-connected gadgets and home appliances all learn to talk to each other, Google wants to be at the center of the conversation. This imagined future is still a few years away, but Google is already preparing with its $3.2 billion acquisition of high-tech thermostat and smoke-detector maker Nest Labs. The surprise deal announced earlier this week will provide Google Inc. with more tools to build a valuable hub for homes. It’s a world of network-tethered toasters and tea kettles, or a so-called “Internet of Things,” that is destined to reshape society, experts say, in the same way that smartphones have done in the seven years since Apple Inc. unveiled the iPhone.

Programming News: RAM Scrapers and the Target Data Breach
The retail and hospitality industries have a painful history with wonky point-of-sale systems and malware known as RAM scrapers. These attacks, which date back as many as six years, are designed to be injected into running processes and steal payment card data before it’s encrypted by a point-of-sale system and the Windows backend servers that manage them. If the attackers behind the Target and Neiman Marcus breaches, as has been reported, used RAM scarpers as one means of pilfering payment card and personal data on up to 110 million individuals, then be prepared to have RAM scrapers elevated to a whole new realm of awareness and concern.
