Apple News: MacBook Air 2014 to ditch Broadwell ‘Core M’ chips?
New rumors state that the next MacBook Air will resort back to i5 and i7 chipsets instead of the forthcoming “Core M” processors. According to reports, the Yoga 3 Pro by Apple’s rival Lenovo runs on the latest M Core chips, but is performing quite poorly in reviews and benchmark tests. The new notebook from Lenovo reportedly has lower performance than its predecessor when it is supposed to be an upgrade. The laptop is also said to be struggling in running the Google Chrome browser, and some of the pertinent programs do not function well with the new processor. This feedback may discourage Apple from including the new chipset in its devices.

Technology News: The internet of things needs developers. So what do developers need?
When it comes to the enterprise there’s a lot of interest in the internet of things, but also a lot of confusion as today’s tech giants struggle to take advantage of this shift. Most see it as a systems integration opportunity rife with service revenue and magic boxes that will remove the pain of collecting and organizing gigabytes of data collected across hundreds of thousands of sensors. Cisco, Dell, IBM, AT&T, Verizon, Oracle, Intel and even GE all are trying to create some version of this scenario in physical hardware or software to sell. Some of these companies have even teamed up to form the Industrial Internet Consortium to try to build out reference architectures so others can simply plug in the available hardware and business processes designed to make taking advantage of cheap sensors and connectivity easier.

Programming News: Functional Programming in PHP
Functional programming has gained a lot of traction those 3 to 5 last years. First, there are some success stories around it : Twitter move to Scala, Whatsapp being written in Erlang. Then we have some new kick-ass languages like Rust. Finally, it seems the new hype is to create a functional language compiling to javascript : Elm, Purescript. On a more academic front, there is also research on new concepts like dependant typing, see Idris for example. Those are all cool and shiny new toys, but we can benefit from some techniques without having to learn a new tool, just by applying some principles to our everyday PHP!
