Apple News: Former Apple CEO John Sculley Says Tim Cook Is Doing A ‘Terrific Job’
Former Apple CEO John Sculley believes Tim Cook is doing a “terrific job” at leading Apple after taking over from Steve Jobs two years ago. Cooks is “continuing the Apple philosophy of no compromise and quality of their products and great styling,” Sculley said, and he commends Cook for “not trying to be Steve Jobs.” “I think Cook is doing a terrific job. He’s not trying to be Steve jobs; only one person could be Steve Jobs and that was Steve,” Sculley told CNBC Asia on Tuesday.

Technology News: Raspberry Pi computer passes ‘million made in Britain’ milestone
More than a million Raspberry Pi computers have been made in Britain, with 1.75m sold globally since going on sale for around £30 in February 2012. The initial batch of the credit card-sized barebones computer were made in China, but a partnership between the Raspberry Pi Foundation, RS Components and Premier Farnell saw all Raspberry Pi manufacturing moved to a Sony-owned manufacturing plant in Pencoed, Wales in September 2012. Since June 2012, production of Raspberry Pis at the Pencoed factory have ramped up from just 204 a week to nearly 40,000 Raspberry Pis a week in April 2013. The Raspberry Pi is a credit card-sized barebones computer that uses a smartphone-like ARM processor to provide a basic and extensible computing platform for hobbyists, teachers, pupils and corporations alike.

Programming News: Things every practicing software engineer should aim to know
Inspired by a recent blog post by Daniel Lemire and a couple of recent conversions with friends, I decided to write down a “quick” list of the concepts I feel every software engineer should be familiar with. Note that the key word in that was “aim”. I don’t expect every software engineer to know them all coming out of school, or even at any particular point in their career. Before diving into this list, a quick caveat. This whole page is organized around factual knowledge. In practice, this is the least important part of software engineering. Of far more importance is the way you think about problems, your conceptual framework for solving them, and your understanding of design. None of those topics are directly covered here.

Photography News: Photographer Captures Powerful Lightning Storms Over Grand Canyon
Lightning and powerful storms were important to ancient peoples around the world, inspiring myths about gods and demons. Today, however, we are no less fascinated by powerful weather, be it lightning or supercell storm clouds. U.S.-based photographer Rolf Maeder has captured their impressive elemental power perfectly in these photographs taken on a stormy night at the Grand Canyon. Maeder drove to the canyon looking to take some sunset pictures and found, arguably, something far more interesting. By using very long exposure times, he was able to capture multiple lightning strikes in a single photograph (camera shutters typically open for a fraction of a second to take a picture. For some pictures, Maeder held it open for 25 seconds). These are not Maeder’s only awe-inspiring nature shots – he has others on his website and blog, and he sells prints of them as well.
